Weekend getaways near SingaporeYou're a typical Singaporean and you live like one. You have a stressful job from 8 am to 8 pm and though you love your hawker food, you usually rush through lunch. With the new Atkins fad, you avoid carbos till your doctor tells you your cholesterol is high. You need a break. You need a rest. You need a weekend getaway to recharge your batteries and prevent yourself from burning out. Good news is, there's lots of beautiful developed weekend getaways around Singapore, within an hour's drive, within an hour's flight. There's lots to do, shopping, spa treatments and massages, seafood to eat, and lots of lazing by the beach or hotel pool to be done. Just up north, there's Malaysia and Thailand. Down south, there's Indonesia. Chances are, at an affordable rate, you can enjoy a quick weekend getaway without burning a hole in your pocket. Down south, 45 minutes away by ferry, there's Bintan and Batam. Not much in the way of shopping, but lots of beach to laze by and enjoy. The Banyan Tree Bintan and the Angsana Bintan are world class resorts managed and owned by the famed Banyan Tree brand, and the spa treatments there are a great way to spend a Saturday. Start by washing your feet in scented warm water, before going on for a body treatment, massage with aromatherapy or herbs of your choice, a facial to pamper, smoothen and moisten your skin and finish on with a soak in a warm pool while you enjoy the afternoon sun. Along the east coast of Johor, there's Desaru, Pulau Sibu and Tioman. The east coast of Malaysia, facing the South China Sea, has been blessed with fine white beaches and clear turqoise waters. Just do take care not to visit between the monsoon months of November to March, where the strong waves preclude any chance you have of enjoying sea sports. If shopping is your thing, there's Bangkok, two hours and just a few dollars away by plane. With numerous new low cost airlines including Tiger Airways, Valuair and Air Asia offering cheap fares on the Singapore-Bangkok route, a ticket can be had for around S$50. Bangkok's weekend markets offer some really cheap and good bargains, especially if you're streetsmart and have honed your bargaining skills against all and sundry. Imitation products may be so well produced they are hardly distinguishable from the genuine article, so do beware. If a good seafood dinner is your thing, take a short drive down to Kukup, just off the western tip of West Malaysia. Famous as a fishing village, and a place for good fresh and cheap seafood, you can observe how villagers here live and marvel at the kids balancing their motorbikes on the narrow walkways. If you're not really one for travelling anywhere far, there's always Sentosa. The Sentosa Spa and Resort is a world class beach resort right in our own backyard at Tanjong Beach Sentosa, with a great view from the Cliff restaurant and your choice of swimming in the pool or the lagoon. There really are quite a number of places where Singaporeans can go for a cheap and enjoyable weekend getaway, whether you want to shop till you drop or laze till you sunburn. |
