About Phuket

Phuket is world famous as a beautiful island beach resort, and lies just off the southwestern coast of Thailand.

Boasting five beautiful beaches, Phuket plays host to millions of sun-loving beachgoers every year.

The busiest, and also the most commercialised, is Patong Beach, off the central west coast of Phuket Island. Lined with endless rows of stalls selling everything from ethnic handicrafts to cheap t-shirts to pirated cds and dvds, Patong is thronged by visitors grabbing a tan and surfing the waves in the day, and prowling the streets in search of a good bargain by night.

Phuket, along with fellow southern Thai town Pattaya, has also got an infamous reputation as a seedy town, where certain backstreets are lined with bars and clubs of dubious reputation, where ladies of negotiable virtue can be rented by the hour.

Thailand also boasts a large number of transsexuals, and some of the most skilled sex-change surgeons in the world. Simon's Cabaret, at the southern end of Patong, hosts a nightly show that is often sold-out, starring some unbelievably tall and leggy transsexuals and transvestites.

Getting there

Phuket boasts an airport served by multiple international airlines. Travellers from the US or Europe would probably have to get a flight to Bangkok or Singapore before transferring to a flight to Phuket.

Getting around is no problem, with multiple taxis lining the street at any hour of the day or night.
