An Introduction to Singapore and Travel Tips

So you`re visiting Singapore ? Yes, we know that it`s a thriving city state right smack in the middle of South East Asia, a major port, and a modern, safe city full of greenery, where it`s sunny all year round and sales around the year fuel and endless shopping spree.

Lying just north the equator, Singapore has overcome its lack of natural resources to become one of the busiest economies of Asia. Yet it retains its unique diversity of culture, views of the modern and the past. In the crowded streets of Chinatown, fortune tellers, calligraphers and temple worshippers are still a part of everyday life. In Little India, you can buy the best sari material, freshly ground spices or a picture of your favourite Hindu god. In the small shops of Arab St, the cry of the imam can be heard from the nearby Sultan Mosque. 5 minutes away, Orchard road offers shopping to rival Oxford Street and Fifth Avenue.

Yet the one thing that visitors remember about Singapore is the food. Singaporeans love their food tasty and cheap, and hawker centres, neighbourhood coffeeshops and food courts abound. Traditional chinese fare abound, from Wan Tan noodles more spicy than their Hong Kong cousins, fragrant Hainanese Chicken Rice with soft tasty chicken on a bed of rice, to sinful fried Char Kway Teow. Spicy malay and Indian curry dishes are bound to whet your appetite for more, and decent Italian fare can be found at Al Forno`s and Pontini`s.

Orientation

The Singapore River is the heart of the city. To the south is the central business district centred on Raffles Place, and along the riverbanks are the popular districts of Boat Quay and Clarke Quay. Chinatown adjoins the CBD to the southwest while to the north lies the colonial district. Farther north are Little India, based around Serangoon Rd, and Arab St, the Muslim centre of the city. From the colonial district, Bras Basah Rd heads northwest to become Orchard Rd, Singapore's main shopping area, with dozens of luxury hotels and shopping malls.

To the west of the island is the industrial area of Jurong, to the east the beachside East Coast district, to the northeast is Changi and the island of Pulau Ubin. Huge high-rise blocks dominate the east and northeast, while the central north and northwest is home to what's left of Singapore's forest.

Hotel Information

Five star hotels are plenty in the Orchard Road and Marina area. Budget hotels also abound in the Joo Chiat and Geylang area for travellers on a slimmer budget.
