Yorkshire Dales - the farming countryside of James Herriott
Mention the `Dales and an evocative vision of rolling hilly farmland comes to mind, an ancient land of hills and lakes, of grizzled gnarly old farmers tending sheep and cattle amidst fields of waist height slate walls that curve in random directions. The Yorkshire dales are peaceful and beautiful, and in summer, one can walk or cycle endlessly through the many footpaths and three National Heritage trails or along the coastline and enjoy such tranquil scenery without seeing another soul for hours. Even with a history from the time of the Vikings and the Romans that spans over 2000 years, one often feels that not much has changed. Ancient monuments still stand tall, as do the inhabitants. Most famously represented by the series of books by veterinarian James Herriott, the dales comprise of six dales, Wharfedale, Malhamdale, Ribbledale, Dentdale, Wensleydale and Swaledale, boasting some of the most stunning countryside scenery in Northern England, ever bit as picturesque as the nearby Lake District. The 'Skeldale House' of the James Herriott is situated at Alf Wight’s original surgery at 23 Kirkgate, Thirsk, North Yorkshire, evocative of the 40s and 50s and definitely worth a visit to any fan of Mr Herriott. While there, don`t hesitate to stop by and enjoy some good old-fashioned fish and chips, possibly the best you`ll get within the United Kingdom. Although many towns do boast fashionable restaurants and varied cuisine, from French, to Indian and even Mediterranean, nothing comes close to embodying the taste of Yorkshire like some really tasty roast beef and Yorkshire pudding. |
